Holy Trash was a commissioned installation at the Center for Jewish History, in New York City in October 2016. The installation was 100 concrete casts of deaccessioned works from the archive of the museum.
The Geniza is a mysterious concept: it demands that any object bearing any of the names of God, cannot be discarded like normal trash - it must be respected in its disposal, as though the very act of writing God’s name transforms it into a sacred object. The Geniza is also an impossibility: it is a receptacle that is not denoted by form, but by content. Genizas have no standard construction, they follow the boundaries of their context.
